Oh, mann! I am so jealous! Beautiful car. You may want to invest in a new M steering wheel (vid below). Get to know the e39source channel, especially as Ryan (the main guy) has put tons of time and money into his 00 M5. There's a lot of great DIYs, too.

Nice! My old E39 M5 still ranks as my favorite car over. Looks like this one also has some of the post-2001 upgrades like the angel eye lights.

You're either really amazing at appraising e39s, or you're familiar with this car. ;)

I'm very grateful to be able to afford multiple fun cars. I looked at everything from GTIs to Teslas, used Quattroporte to Macan. For <30k, to have fun/comfort/usability I couldn't get away from e39 m5. I had almost bought one a few times in the last 15 years, this time it was time.

Huge congrats is in order. Enjoy in good health. But such a low mileage M5 should only be taken out for the occasional spirited drive. As a daily, you should of picked up a clean stick shift 540i M Sport for a 5th of the price of the M5.

I can't agree on either point. While I bought this to "save" miles off another fun car, a 76 911 3.2, it's more a function of being a better all weather commuter. Besides, if I subscribed to sparing my cars because of collectability/value I could never bring myself to drive the rapidly appreciating 911 much less track it.

While I appreciate the 540i has fans, this was really a right-time/right-place thing that fell in my lap. It was local to me, in my top color combo, with mods I was happy with. A 540i would have taken more time to source and the time/effort/travel to do so could have easily eaten up the savings.

It's my only gripe (along with that imperfection on the console trim).

It will get replaced. While I appreciate the dsp/bus compatibility headaches, I'm not married to staying OEM or OEM-Compat (dynavin, etc). I may just jump up to one of the new double dins that support car play/android auto. In my perfect world, If i could get Waze running on the nav screen with bluetooth and local/streamed media playback then I'm pretty much ecstatic.

Thanks, super happy with it! PO did a nice job on updates like euro angel eyes HIDS, black kidneys, and tinted rears. Has a very subdued black/blue thing that works.

Plans are minor. Enjoy it mostly. Update the wheel and nav (both mentioned elsehwere in comments) to clean up aesthetics and functionality. Maybe some wheels down the road, OEM are pretty nice but something a little less busy and a darker gray. Don't want to go black or two dark so it gets lost in the tires, so just something like the Dark Tinted Clear from HRE or similar.

I purchased it fully intending to drive it until it gives up the ghost and can no longer be saved by voodoo like insanely ill advised engine transplants or other tomfoolery. Or more likely: It's forced off the road by aggressive legislation by the anti-human-driven lobby.

Sounds great, OEM+ e39 M5 is one of my dream cars, hopefully there are still nice ones like yours left by the time I can buy one! And on the wheels, I definitely agree, black wheels are a little bland in my opinion (it does work rarely on certain cars though).

Hope it stays problem free for ya! You should do a proper photo shoot and make more people jealous haha.

Ohhh I like that 911. I passed on a black 1980 SC Weissach Package for $22k a few years ago. Big mistake. But the 540i isn't mine, just a Google Image find. I've never owned an e39 but I've experienced them through family members circa 10-15 years ago. One uncle had a Blue Water M5 in RHD and another had a 528d estate. Lovely things. I especially liked the robust feel of the interior. They never quite matched that at BMW...

Anyways, congratulations on the beautiful stable. I've got a few older BMWs as well, but here's a pic of my pride and joy :)

You might check out the sweet unites from Avin - they have an android based system called the Avin Avant 2 that’s plug and play. Not cheap at $799, but those are the ones I’m looking at for my car. Buy from Jeff at jandtdistributing.com for great customer service. I am in no way affiliated with him, nor have I dealt directly with him, but he is always great on the forums!

There’s a ton of things you could do, but I think just changing the stock wheel to the OE M-wheel makes the biggest difference. You might also consider the facelift taillights (with the 4 LED light tubes) LED interior lighting kit , LED angel eyes (make sure they’re e39 specific), and maybe LED license plate lights . I prefer to do my shopping at ECSTuning.com, as they have great customer service. Shipping isn’t the cheapest or fastest, but it’s fine for general maintenance parts. You may want to keep an eye on your front wheel bearings as well, as mine have started to let go at 100k miles.
